Directions
Read, review, and enjoy books with your children.
  1. Select: Choose several books based on your children's interests. Ask your local librarian for suggestions, or check out our Favorite Books index.
  1. Read: Feature one new book a day. Read the story aloud to your children.
  1. Review: After you read the story, ask your children what they thought. Keep a journal where you can record the title of the book, along with children's comments.
  1. Rate: Let children create their own rating system, with symbols representing their opinions. For instance:
J = I liked it!
K = It's OK.
L = I didn't like it.

Let children draw the appropriate symbol on a blank label, and stick it in the journal next to the book title.

Talk About It
Encourage children to talk about the books you read. Prompt them with questions: Do you think the story was exciting/sad/boring? What do you think of the ending? Have you ever felt the way that character did?

With a Group
Have each child in the group select a favorite book to be read aloud and discussed. Make a chart with the book titles and reviews. Ask your librarian if you can post the chart in the children's section of your local library.
